Cobweb Consett group emissive no.4

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Dear all

This term started with a bump as some of you were still on holiday or didn’t realise that we were starting before most schools went back.

However, we still turned out in strength with a perfectly formed orchestra for Schubert’s 4th symphony, which sounded good straight away. I’m sure it will become even more stylish over the next few weeks.

Also on the agenda are some folk dances by Liadov and Smetana’s “Bartered Bride” overture amongst many other delights such as….

BEETHOVEN 9

You may have noticed from Catherine’s various postings that we’re going to have a go at Beethoven’s “Choral” Symphony in Middlesbrough Town Hall on 9th October. I’d like to run it on some Thursday evenings leading up to that date and would be grateful if you could all download your own parts so that we can build up a useable set.

Here’s the link:

http://imslp.org/wiki/Symphony_No.9,_Op.125_(Beethoven,_Ludwig_van)

It would be even better if you could print off two parts in case you have a desk partner who doesn’t get this letter AND e-mail me to let me know what you’ve downloaded so that I can keep a list and know what extra parts I might need to make up the set.

AND AN EDITH PIAFSONG

I’m also attaching a folder of parts for “Non, je ne regrette rien”. If everyone prints off an appropriate part, we can run it on Thursday. And there’s even a vocal part in case there’s anyone out there who fancies themselves as a chantuese. Don’t be shy, it would be great to have it sung.

A VERY GOOD IDEA FROM SARAH

I know I’m not alone in finding the acoustic in St. Patrick’s Church Hall loud, boomy and difficult to work with, but Sarah (trumpet) has come up with a possible solution which is simple and elegant and just might work: If everybody brought a towel and put it on the floor or draped it somewhere, over a radiator, for instance, it could make it much easier for us to hear each other.

Worth a go, I reckon.

HELEN’S BAGS

The charity bag collection, which regularly raises money for Cobwebs, is this week. So please fill up plastic bags with used but still useful clothes and leave them at St. Pat’s on Thursday evening.

Sorry this letter has so many bits to it. Just one more:

THE E-MAIL LIST

Because there are so many of you on my Consett maillist, I have to split it into two so that talk21.com can deal with it. This may mean that some of you are on both parts of the list and get this twice. If that’s the case, please let me know so that I can rationalise.

Also, if you’d rather not get these occasional notes, tell me to take you off the list. On the other hand, there may be people, especially if they’ve started attending recently, who would like to receive them but don’t. If you know anyone in this category, please inform.

Hope to see you all soon (with downloaded parts and towels)

Andy

Snow update from Consett

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Dear all

In view of the dispatch from our local reporter, I think it’s sensible to postpone the start of term at St. Pat’s until next Thursday 14th January. 7.15pm as usual.

I hope to see many of you there to play (amongst lots of other things) Borodin’s 1st symphony. It works best with plenty of trumpets and trombones, so bring along brass playing friends, won’t you?

I also hope you’re not too inconvenienced by the weather and are just enjoying a few extra days cuddling up in a warn home.

Best wishes

Andy

Consett snowed off tonight, Thurs 17 Dec 09

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

Dear players,
I have taken account of the current conditions in Consett (poor, with snow lying) and the Met Office’s warnings (see www.metoffice.gov.uk ) and decided not to risk people’s lives.

I am therefore – reluctantly – taking the decision to cancel tonight’s rehearsal.

I’m sorry you’ll miss the festivities – you’ll just have to eat your grub and drink your booze with friends at home!

Have an excellent Christmas, and we’ll re-start at Consett on 7th Jan 2010 (assuming the weather has improved!)

All the best,
David

Durham group venue, May 14th

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

This Thursday, May 14th, the Durham Cobwebs regular group is meeting in the Lamplight Theatre in Stanley, at the usual time of 7.15 pm.

Best wishes
Liz

See you soon, I hope

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

I can’t be at Consett this Thursday (5th Feb), and next week’s half term, so none of us will be there, but I hope to see everyone soon either at the Sage on Saturday or at Ashington on Valentine’s Day or when normal service is resumed on 19th Feb.

New venue for the Co. Durham group

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

Start of term for Co. Durham group – 8th January 2009
Time – 7.15 – 9.15
Venue – St. Patrick’s Church Hall, Consett.

Although it is on Victoria Road, the car park is on Gibson Street and satnavs would use the following postcode: DH8 5LB.

The car park is adjacent to the Church Hall.

Directions:

Once you reach the crossroads with traffic lights at the heart of Consett with Weatherspoons on one side and the Braes pub opposite, take the road which takes you in between the two pubs (Braes on the right, Weatherspoons on the right). Go straight ahead; go past the bus station on the left and you’ll reach a set of traffic lights with a bookies on the left-hand side. Take this left. Very soon afterwards, take a right turn which swoops round to the car park. If you go past the Trades Night club, you’ve gone too far. The Church Hall is on your left.

IMPORTANT – new rehearsal venue for Harelaw group

Friday, August 29th, 2008

From September 4th 2008 the venue for the Harelaw group will be

Annfield Plain Community Centre
Greencroft
STANLEY
DH9 8PP

Rehearsal times remain the same, but to keep costs down the hall has been booked from 6.50pm to 9pm, so as always we shall need to leave promptly.

Please can you pass this information on to anyone you know who doesn’t use the google group?

Dates for the rest of the term for all the regular groups will be published in the Newsletter.

Harelaw group rehearsal May 1st – CHANGE OF VENUE

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

We have (finally) managed to book the Phoenix Centre for Thursday night’s rehearsal. It’s just a litle bit further up the road from Harelaw School on the opposite side. Denise, the caretaker, says she will open the big gates so we can park in the yard; there is also parking on the roadside.

Venera is coming to look at some of the music for the Bishop Auckland concert, as well as bringing the violinist who is going to play a Beethoven Romance at the concert.

See you there

Liz

Harelaw rehearsals

Friday, March 21st, 2008

Just a reminder that the Harelaw group is still meeting next week (27 Mar) and the week after (3 April).

It’s because of the school holidays in Co. Durham, which are not the same as in some other LEA areas.

Some people seemed to think we would be stopping because it’s Easter this weekend.

Please pass the word around in case others thought the same.

Andy
