Off-shoot groups
We are lucky to have many proactive and talented players who arrange off-shoot activites around the periphery of our core programme of events.
Ensembles Weekend
Each term our players organise a weekend of activities giving you the opportunity to get together with like-instrumented people and play with different shaped ensembles. We've had flute groups, string orchestra, swing bands, brass group, double-reed ensemble, baroque ensemble, clarinet choir.
If you'd like to know more about the ensembles weekend or to help arrange a group please contact our Ensembles Weekend Co-ordinator Sue Matthews - sue-matthews@sky.com
Baroque Ensemble
The Cobwebs Baroque Ensemble is probably our most active off-shoot group. They meet semi-regularly usually in the Durham area and perform across the region raising funds for the Cobwebs coffers. So, if you're into Handel, Bach, Correlli and Scarlatti. For more information please contact Toby Lipman - toby.lipman@cobweborchestra.org.uk
Composers & Arrangers
Our Composers & Arrangers group offers people a forum to discuss their work and aspirations. Usually concentrating on one theme per meeting connected with the many aspects of composing and arranging, such as writing for strings or arranging a baroque piece for a different orchestral make-up. People attending do not need to be instrumnetalists, nor even to write music, though most of us do. Composers & Arrangers also call together the GPO (Guinea Pig Orchestra) for testing out their works in progress and other controlled musical experiments.
Guinea Pig Orchestra
The GPO is open to anyone of any ability and is always free to play in. It is a self selecting, ad hoc group of brave players who volunteer to be guinea pigs whenever Cobwebs needs to carry out controlled musical experiments. Usually, GPO sessions are called to hone conducting skills, or for our composers & arrangers to try out a new pieces, but you never quite know what it'll be next.
Cabaret Ensemble
The Cabaret Ensemble is an ad hoc group of between 10 and 15 players pulled together by Andy Jackson who provide sophisticated entertainment for occasions when the whole orchestra would be too big. Previous performances have included a Billie Holiday evening, music and poetry events, concerts in libraries and a programme based on the life and music of Count Josef Boruwlaski. To enquire about booking the Cobwebs Cabaret Ensemble please contact Andy Jackson - andy.jackson@cobweborchestra.org.uk
